GAME Not Having A Very Good Time

Retailer GAME are having a rough time at the moment.

The Eyjafjallajökull volcano has not only caused havoc to those travelling through the skies, it has affected retail distribution with GAME issuing a ‘volcano warning’. “Please be aware the closure of UK airspace in parts of Europe unfortunately continues to affect the transport of mail by air and could cause delays with delivery of orders. This is impacting upon some UK domestic mail and mail due to either leave or enter the country via UK airports.”

Following Game Group PLCs published financial results reporting a 10% drop in turnover in the year to 31st January 2010, Chief Executive Lisa Morgan has stepped down as well as UK Chief Operating Officer Terry Scicluna. With over 700 stores in the UK and over 800 throughout Europe and Australia, Game Group PLC has attributed the decline in profits to the plunge in videogame sales globally.

In addition to these issues, there are further cutbacks with 127 stores set to close leaving just 550 GAME stores at the end of Christmas 2013. “We continue actively to review our UK store base, with a view to minimising store overlap and maximising opportunities from lease expiries, breaks and rent reviews,” chairman Peter Lewis stated. “Our stores are a place to experience games, and the format is evolving to cater for their changing needs and the incoming new technology,” he added. “We are trialling interactive kiosks and improved ecommerce connectivity in selected stores to expand further the range with thousands more product lines and enhanced the customer experience.”
