MediaKick’s Most Wanted (Pre-E3)

With E3 less than a week away, a wealth of new titles and content should be announced. Here at MediaKick, we’re curious as to the effect that the expo will have on our gaming wish-list; so based on current knowledge and titles, the following games are the ones that the staff here at MediaKick are most excited about:

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

Staff writer Kev is especially excited for this one; not just because he loved the original, but as Starkillers second outing will hit shelves on his birthday. After raving about the first one, when the announcement of a sequel dropped at last years Spike Video Game Awards, we all quite literally flipped our lids. When the first note of Yoda’s opening words hit our ears, our excitement jumped off the chart. What followed was an electrifying reveal. Providing they can sort out the dodgy camera system, the combination of the Star Wars universe, a superb physics engine a gripping story, this has the potential to become one of the greatest Star Wars games of all time.

Brink

Since that historic moment during last years Eurogamer Expo when Paul Wedgwood, the CEO of London-based studio Splash Damage, showed off (in quite secretive fashion) their new upcoming shooter Brink, it’s been the talk of the town. Dubbed, at the time around Old Billingsgate, the love child of Killzone and Mirrors Edge on crack, Brink is a first-person shooter with more than just a solitary twist. With advanced 8v8 multiplayer modes, huge customisation to the highly stylised characters and a SMART free running system to allow vast manoeuvrability around the games complex city, Ark. The demos shown at and since the Expo have been stunning and when released this year, Brink could steal all the limelight.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

By injecting some colour, Enslaved immediately stands out from the competition. Set one hundred and fifty years into the future, during a time where nearly the entire human race has been eradicated by confused mecs, it is all about surviving. After a gripping new trailer for the action-adventure game showing off its lush environments, what could potentially be a gripping plot and if Ninja Theory’s track record is anything to go by – some fantastic combat, Enslaved is shaping up to be a big hit when it arrives this year.

Killzone 3

After the amazing Helghan-based shooter of Killzone 2, Guerrilla Games are bringing the big guns to the highly anticipated sequel. Unlike any of the franchises previous titles, the game will take place in various harsh environments such as Arctic landscapes, a lethal alien jungle, nuclear wastelands as well as space battles. With a new brutal melee combat system shown off in the teaser trailer and some mind-blowing screenshots in addition to fully destructible environments, Jetpacks and “game-changing” 3D, Killzone 3 is already shaping up to compete for the crown of shooters.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Set in the year 2027, this prequel will show a time where biomechanical augmentation is all the rage. Aside from perhaps one of the best videogame trailers of all time, information on Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a tad scarce; yet there is already a powerfully dynamic being exuded by the game and with the history – and developer – that the franchise has behind it there is every reason to be pumped. With a truly stunning art direction, political corruption, human augmentation, bionics, stealth suits and more, this has shot up our Most Wanted list.

LittleBigPlanet 2

After falling in love with Sackboy from day one, there was little to improve upon his outing on LittleBigPlanet. However, with the talent on hand at Media Molecule, they are one of those developers that will always blow you away. After seeing the infectious trailer showing off a multitude of new features for the sequel, it is difficult not to be excited. Moving from a Platformer to a “Platform for Games”, the Guildford-based studio are creating something remarkable. As “Sleepyhead” by Passion Pit blasts through my speakers, you can’t help but feel uplifted and cheerful. Whilst having a lot to live up to, it stands to reason that LittleBigPlanet will change the face of customization forever. The potential for what LittleBigPlanet 2 could bring, not just to us gamers, but to the gaming industry, it’s image and its future is unimaginable.

Notable mentions

Mafia II – Having the original Mafia on PC is a memory I remember fondly. With some of the most realistic and breathing cities of its generation and a fantastic plot, the announcement of a sequel back in 2007 had me as giddy as a schoolgirl. Now with only a few more months to go, I will once again be able to step into the shoes of a family man.

F.3.A.R. – Despite it’s ridiculously annoying name, writer Liam is very excited for the sequel of F.E.A.R. 2. While the offering of Marmite-esque co-op (do you love it or hate it?) may reduce the scare factor, providing the A.I. and Killzone-style “weighty controls” are anything like the Project Origin, then we will have to prepare for some Liam-free time. We can dream.

Gran Tursimo 5 – After so many delays, my personal interest is beginning to wave, but some of us will never be put off by a delay. With plenty of cars and tracks to boot it has the potential to be the ultimate racer. Forza III has hopefully given the GT5 Prologue and demo a slap around the face and GT5 to be bouncing back with better visuals, better handling and more variety.

DC Universe Online – Sat in the realm of indecision, the MMORPG will be either insanely awesome, or flop like a Magikarp out of water. Or so our writer Kev thinks as he prays for the former.

Halo Reach – Having read the books and love the series, our Halo-fanatic Liam is always psyched for some first-person shooter action. Being more interested in the campaign and the continuation of the story (or rather the beginning with this prequel), he’s actually not too fussed about multiplayer this time around and believes that there are many other offerings out at the same time that could satisfy your fill.

Medal of Honour – The trailers look great and we am rooting for a really good game as it deserves to return in style. Having grown up with Medal of Honour (being my personal shooter of choice), a preferential and unique bond was formed and now we all hope it takes a nice clean shot at Call of Duty and takes its head right off! With DICE doing the multiplayer side of things and EA publishing – it should also be an example of how not to rip the consumers off with DLC and a wake up call to Activision that their arrogance is no longer warranted.
