The Official PlayStation Magazine is featuring The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and with it, a ton of new information. Dragon encounters will be completely unscripted and you will meet them at random. Injured dragons will not be able to fly allowing you to fight them on the ground.
Some new shouts were also mentioned. Yol Toor, Fire Breath, Iiz Slen, Ice Crystals, Strun Bah Qo, Lightning Storm, Slow Time and Whirlwind Spirit allow you to move quickly in one direction.
Some of the dual wielding combinations were also revealed as were torches as a combat weapon. The combinations are:
- Weapon and weapon
- Weapon and shield
- Weapon and torch
- Spell and weapon
- Spell and spell
- Two-handed weapon
Bethesda reveal that the random quests in Skyrim are inspired by the random encounters in Fallout 3 and this was done because they didn’t like how ‘fake’ some the quests in Oblivion felt. They hope Skyrim is more ‘real’ and believable.
Bethesda also announced that you will be able to use 13 different types of ore to use in crafting and that hand to hand combat has been removed.
Three new guilds were revealed and the stories of them will be interwoven with one another and the main quest. These guilds will be joining the Dark Brotherhood:
- The Thieves Guild
- The College of Winter Hold (for Mages)
- The Companions (for Warriors)
Over 60,000 lines of dialogue were recorded with more actors so don’t expect to hear the same line repeated again and again by the same actor like Oblivion.
Each city in Skyrim has its own unique economy and can be destroyed by the player. Guards still patrol the city streets but won’t be as hard to kill as they were in Oblivion. Bounties placed on the player will not hold throughout the land. For example, if the player kills someone in one city, the bounty will not hold in another city.
Fast travel options were also discussed. Horses make a return as does the travel system from Morrowind. Players will be able to fast travel using Oblivion’s fast travel system but only to places they have already discovered much like Fallout.
Sounds like Bethesda are trying to improve on Oblivion as much as they can. Skyrim is due out November 11 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
