How Close Were Our E3 Predictions?

So just over three weeks ago, we made our E3 predictions for this year’s event. Now, with the expo comfortably over, we take a look at how well we did, and whether or not Mystic Meg’s got some competition. Luckily for her, we’ll be putting our crystal balls away for another year, as we did pretty poor.

David Howard:

psvitathin How Close Were Our E3 Predictions?
So let’s start of with me shall we? Well, it looks like I’d be best off-putting my crystal ball away from another year as with only two out of eleven correct, my predictions were pretty far off.

Spot on:

  • NGP to be given solid release date, price and name – The now named PS Vita got its official unveiling, along with a “this year” release date and a brilliant price, aligning it with its main competitor, the Nintendo 3DS. A pretty good showing for it in all respects.
  • Sony very apologetic over PSN hack – Perhaps it wasn’t as big as expected, but it was humble and heart-felt and exactly what Sony needed. Now they can put the situation to bed and move on.

Nearly:

  • A total of five big sequels announced – Halo 4 was the only truly huge sequel announced, but with Sly Cooper 4, Dance Central 2, Luigi’s Mansion 2, Just Dance 3, Contra, and a host of Wii U titles, I wasn’t far off… was I?

Not even close:

  • Final Fantasy Versus XIII demoed – Not even a sniff. Shame.
  • Sorcery given new trailer and release date – Missing in action. Only Medieval Moves to attempt to save the Move.
  • Microsoft announce two new big IPs – With Codename Kingdoms becoming the Kinect game Ryse and the other new title being based on the Fable universe there simply was nothing new from Microsoft aside Kinect Fun Labs and Disneyland Adventures – both of which are far from ‘big’ IPs. Worrying indeed.
  • GTA V revealed – It was a bit of a long shot but no mention of GTA V let alone an appearance.
  • Super Mario Galaxy 3 to be a launch title for Project Cafe – With the Wii U announcement saw a complete lack of new titles announced for it. So Super Mario Galaxy 3 could still be on for a Wii U launch but for now, that is not the case.
  • Next Xbox revealed – Next year then?
  • Mirror’s Edge 2 revealed – This was more wishful thinking than anything.
  • Bungie reveal their latest game – There are murmurings that something may be revealed soon, but during E3? Nada.

Ryan Martin:

kinectstarwarsthin How Close Were Our E3 Predictions?
Getting a marginally better result than myself, Ryan manages to get three out of his twelve predictions correct.

Spot on:

  • Mario 3DS to be revealed – Shown during their E3 conference, Nintendo continue to push out the Mario titles. To be fair though, Super Mario 3DS looks like a fantastic addition to both the 3DS and Mario libraries.
  • Final Fantasy XIII-2 to be shown – We got a few screens and a new trailer, hopefully enough to satisfy Ryan for a few months more.
  • Star Wars Kinect will be rubbish – Now, this ones a tad subjective but amongst the entire MediaKick staff, we’re in agreement. It looks pants.

Nearly:

  • NGP to get solid release date – Again, PS Vita got a solid run out by Sony, but with just a “this year” release period, we still have no exact date.

Not even close:

  • GTA V to get revealed – I wasn’t the only one to make this prediction, but that means I wasn’t the only one to get it wrong.
  • Respawn show off their ‘CoD beater’ – Not even the slightest inkling of Respawn at this years E3.
  • Valve actually show up and reveal Half Life 3 – As much as Ryan had hoped, Valve kept to their word and didn’t even turn up for E3 this year.
  • Zelda Skyward Sword to get released on Project Cafe – It seems that Skyward Sword is still set for a release on the Wii.
  • Next Xbox revealed – Maybe Crytek know something…?
  • I Am Alive shown – It seems that even Ubisoft has forgotten about this. Do we have the next Duke Nukem Forever on our hands?
  • Last Guardian playable – Nowhere to be seen this year. Most likely preparing for a TGS showing.
  • Final Fantasy XIII Versus goes multiplatform – It’s hard to be announced for multiple platforms when you don’t even show up.

Liam Bull:

kinectthin How Close Were Our E3 Predictions?
Liam did pretty well with five out of a possible eleven, in fact he takes the prize as most accurate out of us all.

Spot on:

  • An amazing Battlefield 3 trailer and possibly live gameplay – We saw it, we marvelled, it looked fantastic.
  • Big feature on Kinect and its success so far – Considering well over half of Microsoft’s press conference was Kinect focused, this one was comfortable.
  • Gears of War 3 demoed – Although it was shown off during the conference, it was somewhat overshadowed by the rest of the conference. Nonetheless, it was there and it was demoed.
  • Sony very apologetic over PSN hack – Tretton opened the conference with it. It was humble and exactly what was needed.
  • Massive Modern Warfare 3 reveal – Although we knew it was coming

Not even close:

  • Microsoft announce a mammoth new IP – Almost all of the new announcements were sequels or games within the an established franchise, and Kinect Fun Labs is far from ‘mammoth’
  • Microsoft announce next console – Most of us went for this as a possibility, and we were all wrong.
  • Microsoft have a stab at PSN downtime – It would’ve been pretty distasteful so thankfully they didn’t.
  • Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer beta announced - Never really likely, never going to happen.
  • Trophy Patch announced for Metal Gear Solid 4 – Wishful thinking from Liam, although with the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, surely they could just go back and sort this one out.
  • Diablo III console confirmation – There was no mention of Diablo at all, let alone a console reveal.

Phil Costigan:

witcher2thin2 How Close Were Our E3 Predictions?
Phil didn’t do great to be fair. With just one correct out of eleven, he wins the ‘Most Clueless’ title for this year.

Spot on:

  • NGP to be given solid release date and name – Seems we all fancied a heavy NGP focus this year and most of us got that right.

Nearly:

  • New Final Fantasy XIII-2 trailer and delayed release date – We certainly got a new trailer and a rough release date of “Early 2012″ but not the delay that Phil was expecting.
  • Witcher 2 announced for consoles - He was so close. We certainly did get an announcement of a console appearance for the Witcher 2, however it just wasn’t at E3. Better luck next time.
  • Sony only mention hack in passing – With an opening segment on the topic, it wasn’t exactly mentioned in passing.

Not even close:

  • Project Cafe will launch with a Mario game, Skyward Sword now a launch game – With no real launch games announced, no Mario title revealed and Skyward Sword still coming out on the Wii, Phil was pretty far off with this one.
  • GTA V revealed – Three of us with this wrong prediction now.
  • New Final Fantasy Versus XII information – Not even at the show this year, there wasn’t a hint of Versus XIII.
  • Microsoft announce a Kinect FPS – Anyone put money on it being a Halo one when it eventually gets made?
  • Kingdom Hearts 3 announced – Turns out it really was a dream Phil.
  • New Xbox announced – What’s this? A fourth vote for a new Xbox? That makes a fourth wrong predictions. Bummer.
  • Half Life 2: Episode 3/Half Life 3 revealed – Like Ryan, Phil had an inkling that despite announcing their non-attendance at E3, they may shock the world with an appearance. It wasn’t to be.

Dave Irwin:

3dsthin How Close Were Our E3 Predictions?
Whilst Dave did manage to get two correct, he also made a few more predictions that the rest of us with thirteen, perhaps he should share the ‘Most Clueless’ award with Phil…

Spot on:

  • NGP to get its name, but not necessarily a fixed release date – Named the PS Vita and given a loose release period, Dave was spot on with this one.
  • Release dates for Mario Kart 3D, Super Mario 3D and anything else Nintendo wants to put onto their 3DS – With a 3DS heavy first half of the conference, Nintendo certainly confirmed a strong line up coming for the 3DS now.

Nearly:

  • Sony grovelling to the masses about the PSN hack - Mentioned, but hardly grovelling.
  • Microsoft announce Halo: Combat Evolved remake and rough release date for next year – So close. It certainly was announced but with a set release this year, it’s just not close enough.
  • New Lionhead game at Microsoft keynote speech… and it’s not Fable related – Molyneux waltzed on stage to reveal a new title… a Fable Kinect game. Sorry Dave, but another ‘nearly’ prediction.

Not even close:

  • 3DS/Project Cafe Compatibility explainedSo little was explained during the Nintendo conference, so if there will be any 3DS/Wii U compatibility, we don’t know about it yet.
  • Last Guardian at Sony Keynote speech with actual gameplay footage – Where was it?
  • Surprise swansong title for the Wii – It’s as if Nintendo have decided that Skyward Sword is the last title they’re developing for the Wii, who knows, it may well be.
  • Project Cafe to re-design the Mii’s and then convert to 3DS via update – Not that we know of at least.
  • New Mii based game at Project Cafe’s launch that is bundled with the console to show off the tech – Dave does love his Mii’s but unfortunately they’ll have to stay where they are for now.
  • Next Xbox Console revealed – That makes it five of five. We all thought that Microsoft would reveal and new console which they just did not. A mistake? Probably not but that we all thought it pertinent to predict means it may have been.
  • Bethesda reveal new Call of Cthulhu related game based on HP Lovecraft’s The Dunwich Horror – Sorry Dave, this will have to stay a lingering hope for now.
  • Bungie reveal next project as a non-FPS game – Without an appearance, we can’t even say what the genre is for now.

So I guess we’ll be leaving off the predictions for now, that is until next year at least…
