Editor’s Note: We recently asked you, our community to vote for your Games of the Year across a variety of categories. We received a fantastic number of votes, well surpassing last year’s entries, and well, this is just one of many results. Enjoy.
Action-adventure is a genre that sees dozens of entries every year whether it’s the latest Assassin’s Creed, Dynasty Warriors or summer movie tie-ins. They are one of the cornerstones of gaming that deliver engrossing storylines, marvellous gameplay and, in some cases, addictive online play. Action-adventure titles have been in high demand ever since the days of text based games and since then, there have always been milestones achieved by developers. First it was the inspiration for Wolfenstein 3D, Castle Wolfenstein and Konami’s Castlevania. Then Shigeru Miyamoto created The Legend of Zelda which not only inspired popular titles such as Metroid and Final Fantasy but also established action-adventure titles and gave gaming one of its most diverse genres.
Last year saw MediaKick give the illustrious crown to marginal winner Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood with Davs citing “an exquisite soundtrack, visuals that are a treat to behold, a compelling story and satisfying gameplay” as reason to its success.
But developers have ramped up the quality this year with titles such as Saints Row: The Third, InFamous 2 and L.A. Noire up for the honour. Sadly, there can only be one winner and, with two fabulous prequel titles and a voice actor said to be in every game ever made, we are very pleased to crown Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception as 2011’s Best Action-Adventure Game of the Year.

Uncharted 3 released on November 2 to a second place finish in the UK Charts and within the first week of sale, Sony revealed that the Naughty Dog title had sold 3.8 million units in just 24 hours. As a result, the franchise has now shifted over 13 million units, a mightily impressive feat.
Comparing it a Hollywood blockbuster, Davs said in his review that, “Uncharted 3 is the ultimate cinematic experience; one that will have you riding the highs and lows of a stupendous story, interjecting thrills and enjoyable gameplay, whilst providing a graphical prowess that is remarkable” and clearly, you felt the same as Drake acquired just under 39.3% of your votes outstripping the competition by over fourteen percent.
Having received the game as a birthday present, I was eager to see what supernatural beings awaited Drake in his latest adventure and how, like Assassins’ Creed, history, legends and myths would create an immersive and compelling story. And like the last two titles, I was excited to once again watch a marvellous dynamic between all the characters involved in Uncharted with Drake and Sully becoming one of my favourite gaming pairs along with the like of Monkey and Trip from Enslaved, as well as Ratchet and Clank. Drake’s Deception met all my expectations and more with online multiplayer being improved upon since its rather fantastic launch two years ago in Among Thieves. There really is no reason why any PlayStation 3 owners should not own or, at the very least, play Drake’s Deception. It really is a terrific as everyone tells you.
That’s not all you voted for however, as Rocksteady’s sequel to the magnificent Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, claimed 25.0% of your votes, cementing it as this year’s runner up.
