Call of Duty Series Tops Annual Charts For Third Year Running

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has been announced as the best selling UK game of 2011, with the Call of Duty series now making it three years in a row. A specific number of unit sales were not given but GFK Chart-Track and UKIE, compilers of the annual chart, reminded us of its £83 million of first week sales helping the UK set a new record of £121 million in video game revenue for the week.

Claiming the silver medal in the chart was FIFA 12 with Battlefield 3 following closely behind in third place. The monster of Zumba Fitness, which stayed on top of the Wii chart for 28 straight weeks, sat in fourth place followed by Skyrim in fifth, giving Bethesda their most successful UK title.

Ubisoft claimed sixth and seventh with Just Dance 3 and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations followed by L.A. Noire, Saints Row: The Third and Batman: Arkham City.

“In a year when overall consumer spending was down, the launch of so many high-quality titles showed that there was still strength in the UK’s boxed-product games market,” said UKIE CEO Jo Twist.

“However, whilst the boxed product market still remains a key revenue stream, digital is where much future growth lies and it is therefore vital that we understand the size of this market. UKIE’s Digital Charts, launching this year, will be a step towards measuring digital revenues. I’d urge all games developers and publishers who want to get involved in creating these charts to join UKIE’s digital group.”
