Not Pleasant Reading For Sony’s Last Quarter

Unfortunately, we have a trio of bad news to bring you this morning, so let’s just kick it off and get it out-of-the-way yeah?

Starting us off, Sony. They’ve posted their financials for the quarter ending December 31, 2011 and it doesn’t read good. Citing floods in Thailand as a major contributing factor, the corporation posted a £1.3 billion loss (¥159 billion, $2 billion), including a 17% decrease year-on-year in total revenue.

The biggest loss makers were the Sony division of Consumer Products and Services – which houses all of the gadgets – which saw global sales fall 24% incurring a record loss of £0.7 billion (¥85.7 billon, $1.1billon). This has been attributed to the falling sales of LCD TVs, which is further compounded by the poor currency exchange rate currently.

All that said, there were 6.5 million PlayStation 3s sold during the quarter – a figure up 200,000 on last year. Likewise, software sales for the hardware were up 13% year-on-year, now hitting 66.2 million units. No figures were given for the newly release PlayStation Vita, so expect that in the next financials – when it will have hit most markets.

The golden oldies continue to power on despite drops from the previous, with the PlayStation 2 shifting 0.9 million unites – down from 2.1 million last year; and the PlayStation Portable moving 2.4 million – down from 3.6 million.

This now puts the total number of PlayStation 3 units sold at 62 million units, which is four million behind the 66 million Xbox 360s sold.
