It is pretty clear that certain MMORPGs have a bit of a monopoly when it comes to dominating the PCs. World of Warcraft has fought off many would-be usurpers to its throne, while the recently released Star Wars: The Old Republic has certainly made some noise over the past few months. It would take something that neither Blizzard or BioWare are prepared to do at this point to take away some of the limelight. As NCsoft’s successor to the moderately successful (given the MMO climate) Guild Wars is being treated to Open Beta within the next few months, an interesting phone call was reported by an insider for the company, essentially confirming that Guild Wars 2 for consoles is “in preparation stage”.
When asked to verify the statement by Eurogamer, a NCsoft representative stated, “Currently ArenaNet is focused on making GW2 the best PC MMO ever released.” It is an odd statement as it doesn’t really give much away. One thing is for sure though, the console version is at a different stage in development. During the conference call, an NCsoft executive can be heard saying, “Realistically speaking I don’t think it would be likely that we will be launching the console version [and the PC version] together.”
It wouldn’t be the first time a MMORPG would be released on consoles, with the free-to-play DC Universe appearing on PlayStation 3 and even Phantasy Star Online way back on the Sega Dreamcast. What it does signify if it sees the light of day is that NCsoft is thinking to expand to the consoles, where those nasty big league MMORPGs can’t touch it. The conference call didn’t hint at any consoles or release dates; but with any luck, Guild Wars 2 will release at some point later in the year for PC.
